How to Dye Your Hair Naturally
By Janine Lattimore

We all like to look the best we can, and sometimes our hair needs a little extra help to enhance it, especially as we get older. This article tells you how to dye your hair naturally and provides a number of recipes that you can use which contain easily found ingredients. These homemade hair dyes work more subtly than commercial dyes, but can still give very satisfying results.

Natural Blonde Bleach Rinse

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (processed lemon juice would work, but usually contains a chemical preservative)

1 tablespoon organic apple cider vinegar.

Make up to about 300ml with cool water.

Slowly pour the rinse over wet hair and massage it in (it is easiest to this at the end of a shower). Leave it on and dry as normal. Any scent quickly wears off. This is a mild rinse which can be used every day or two. Sunlight enhances the bleaching effect, as does blow-drying.

For an easier, faster method of lightening your hair use lemon essential oil. You can mix 5-6 drops of lemon essential oil with a leave-in conditioner and put it all through your hair for an all-over lightening treatment. It works very effectively with just one application. You can also put some lemon essential oil on your finger-tips and pick out small sections of hair to highlight. Run the oil down the length of the strand of hair. This gives the effect of having highlights or foils put in your hair. Leave the oil on for a minimum of 4 hours. Again, blow-drying and exposure to sunlight enhance the lightening effect.

Rinse for Dark Hair

Rinses made from these ingredients are supposed to disguise grey hair. However, this rinse will not permanently cover grey hair, you would need to repeat it every few days.

4 tablespoons dried sage.

2 tablespoons dried rosemary.

1 black tea bag (or 1 teaspoon loose black tea leaves).

400ml boiling water.

1 tablespoon organic apple cider vinegar (gives shine and depth).

Put the sage and rosemary leaves and tea bag into a heatproof glass or ceramic container and pour over the boiling water. Let it stand for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid off, add the vinegar and pour it slowly through damp hair as a final rinse. You could let the mix stand overnight if you wanted to apply it at the end of your morning shower. Instead of the dried sage and rosemary you could use 3 drops of Rosemary essential oil.

If you just want to deepen your natural hair colour but not make your hair too dark then leave out the black tea.

Chamomile Highlighting Rinse

Adds highlights and gloss to fair hair. Do not use chamomile on bleached blonde hair as it will give it a yellow tinge.

2 tablespoons dried chamomile or 4 chamomile teabags.

400ml boiling water.

1 tablespoon organic apple cider vinegar.

Put the chamomile into a heatproof glass or ceramic container and pour over the boiling water. Let it stand for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid off, add the vinegar and pour it slowly through damp hair as a final rinse. You can replace the dried chamomile with 2 drops chamomile and 1 drop lemon essential oil.

Lavender Shine Rinse

This is not really a dye, but it does give your hair silkiness and shine.

2 tablespoons dried lavender.

400ml boiling water.

1 tablespoon organic apple cider vinegar (gives shine and depth).

Put the lavender into a heatproof glass or ceramic container and pour over the boiling water. Let it stand for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid off, add the vinegar and pour it slowly through damp hair as a final rinse.

These chemical-free natural hair dyes are easy to make and apply. You can build up effects gradually to get the result you want. There is not risk of burning your scalp and allergic reactions are very unlikely (although if you are sensitive that way then please patch test the mixtures first). These dyes allow you to confidently improve the look of your hair without compromising your health.
