How To Treat Gout Naturally At Home

Gout is a metabolic disease that causes painful inflammation in the joints, and particularly in the big toe of the patient, but also in the fingers and other joints. Usually, however, only one area is affected at first, but if the problem is not treated the condition may affect more joints in the long run.

It seems that gout made its appearance for the first time during the Middle Ages and especially in rich people, because it was associated with the excessive consumption of food and alcohol that only rich people could afford. More recently however, the large increase in the living standards after 1950-1960, led to a sharp increase in the number of patients suffering from gout. Over the past 20 years the incidence of gout has doubled in western societies, because food is now so abundant that even the middle and lower social classes have adopted bad eating habits.

But what exactly causes gout?

Gout is caused by the high concentration of uric acid (more than 7 mgr / dl) in the blood and the tissues of the patient. Uric acid is a product of our metabolism. Certain chemicals called purines, are an important part of our DNA, and when they get metabolized they create uric acid, which is eventually excreted by the kidneys. Purines can become synthesized by our own body, but we can also get them through our food. This means that in some people, uric acid is increased, either because the body produces it in large quantities or because we take more purines from food or because the kidneys have difficulty excreting them. The result is that purines become accumulated in the blood and create crystals, which become attached to the joints and cause inflammation. They can also accumulate in the kidneys and cause kidney damage or kidney stones. However, not all patients with high uric acid develop gout. In fact, only about 20% of them actually end up suffering from the disease. This means that there are many other factors leading to the onset of the condition, like heredity.

How to treat gout:

  • Reduce your weight, if necessary.
  • Follow a balanced diet that contains adequate calories and nutrients.
  • Avoid eating foods that contain purines (such as herring, mackerel, sardines and soy milk).
  • Increase the consumption of carbohydrates and reduce the consumption of fat.
  • Take small and frequent meals.
  • Increase your water consumption.
  • Limit your alcohol intake, because alcohol abuse increases uric acid indirectly.
